Frequently Asked Questions
Feel free to email me you have more questions after perusing this list. I've tried to cover most things on my website, but each session is unique! Also, there is more info about sessions on the "session types" page. Check it out - I'm here for ya!
How long is a session?
All sessions last for different time frames, depending on which type you choose to book. Time frames are based on photo-taking time only, and do not include driving to and from locations, prepping for the session, etc. (Also, when booking your session and scheduling, keep in mind that there are often little moments that we can't account for - especially when shooting with kids or dogs - that can make the session take a bit longer). Time frames for each are listed on "session types" page.
Can I book a wedding as an "event?"
In short, no. There are many reasons for this, and I'm happy to discuss the further over zoom or a coffee date. Basically, due to the emotional depth, planning, and other cultural factors that normally go into weddings, I have to separate them out from other events. I understand that weddings are expensive to plan and put on, but after photographing dozens and dozens of weddings, I have set my prices at what I believe is a fair rate for my style and time. Thanks for understanding!
Can I add people to the shoot last-minute?
Preferably not, and here's why: posing is a *thing.* I will have prepped a set list, if you will, of shots and poses for the number of folks we originally discussed. Also, more people = more time, generally speaking. Adding more people will result in an additional cost due to the shifts that need to happen when we add new bodies and energies. It's doable, though! Just let me know ahead of time and I'll reflect the charges on your invoice. (This includes pets).
How far in advance should I book?
This depends. I tend to book out about 1/2 a year in advance right now. If you're booking a maternity session, we want to make sure you have a nice, big bump showing. That means you're going to want to book after 12 weeks, but far enough ahead to make sure you're on the schedule by beginning of 3rd trimester. Sometimes I have openings, you just need to ask. Typically one month ahead is the soonest I can book.
Do you help with styling?
I can definitely give suggestions based on location, your style and the story we're telling with your photos, experience, number of people in the shoot, etc. I always love sharing Pinterest boards! Ultimately, you need to choose clothing and hair based on what makes you feel your best, but I'm here to chat with! Also, MUA and hair can be made available upon request for an additional charge and if requested far enough in advance.
Do I choose location(s) or do you?
Ultimately it's your choice! I can help you decide based on several factors, including: a) Story we're telling b) Feel & style you're wanting in your final gallery c) Time of day and season that we're shooting d) Distance. I have many suggestions I can make! And there are stipulations about distance and travel time (see below).
Do you charge a travel fee?
My general rules are: For any session that takes place within King or Pierce Counties WA, I will not charge travel fees. Outside those two counties, I charge a $25 travel fee. For shoots off of Vashon Island (where I live) I will also add a ferry price of $25 onto your invoice. (Sessions on-island are exempt). Different locations within one session (i.e., if you book a regular or full session) have to be no more than a 10-minute drive from one another. This rule does not apply or shoots on Vashon Island.
How long will it take to get my final photo gallery?
This depends on the type of session you booked and time of year. Also, due to my "artumentary" editing style, I may take longer than other photogs. In general, I ask for 4-6 weeks to deliver a portrait gallery, 6-7 weeks for a boudoir gallery, 8-10 weeks for a wedding gallery, and about 4 weeks for an event gallery. This is subject to change based on the specifics of your shoot. If you need your gallery rushed, I'm happy to prioritize your photos for an additional fee. Reach out for more details.
What is "artumentary?"
"Artumentary" means I combine documentary-style shoots with highly-processed + artfully edited final images. Documentary style means getting candid images in-camera + little to no editing. I love the real, in-the-moment heart behind this style, and I also love editing photos and making them into fine art. So I combined them! One photo can take me as long as an hour to process (as opposed to a couple minute max for most docu-style). It's a longer process, and well worth it.
Do you share my images on social media and your website?
I love sharing my work and often post images on my website or social media — in fact, it’s one of the main ways people discover and book me these days. (Best word-of-mouth advertising!) That said, your comfort and privacy are my priority. If you prefer to keep your images private, I completely respect that choice. In that case, a $100 fee will be added to your invoice to help offset the loss of advertising opportunities. Thanks for understanding.
How do you help people who are REALLY nervous?
You’re not alone - most people freeze up in front of a lens. It’s totally human nature to feel “on display.” That’s where I come in. I’ll guide you with natural posing, tiny tweaks that make a big difference, and gentle coaching, while still remaining as true as possible to the essence of "documentary style." I can’t (and wouldn’t want to) change the way you look, but I can help you feel more at ease and confident in your own skin!
How do I book my session?
Just get in touch! You can email me at hopeblackphoto@gmail.com or fill out my contact form here on my site. You're not obligating yourself to booking if you reach out, but this is where we can connect and you can tell me a bit about what you're wanting out of your shoot. After we chat, I will send you a personalized price sheet. Just contact me to get the ball rolling!
What if I don't like my photos?
You will. :) But I'll say this: photography is an art form, and style is subjective. When you book me, you’re trusting in my artistic vision and choosing me because you’ve connected with my past work. I always deliver galleries I’m proud of, so you can trust that your images will reflect the same level of love and artistry shown in my portfolio. Because of the creative nature of this work, refunds or reshoots aren’t offered if the images don’t match your personal taste. Thanks for understanding.
When and how do I pay for my photos?
I take a 50% deposit to hold your session date, and the rest is due at the time of the session. Deposit can be paid through my website (I'll send an invoice with a link) and I also accept CC through my phone reader, Venmo, PayPal, Zelle and CashApp. When you sign the contract, you pay the deposit and the rest can be paid in person at the shoot or right before. This ensures that the boring but necessary parts are all taken care of so they don't get in the way of making magickal art-babies <3
